The End of an Era

  • Matthew Horton, one of the best-known law practitioners in Worcestershire, has retired after 45 years with the firm that his great-grandfather established as Scott and Horton more than 150 years ago.  He joined the firm in 1972, aged 23, as assistant solicitor to his father John, and uncle Christopher.  The firm, now called Thomas Horton LLP, with its prominent position at Strand House in Bromsgrove, has been central to Bromsgrove life and Matthew’s involvement in the community has always been whole-hearted.  A number of Bromsgrove organisations have benefited from his generously offering the firm’s offices as a regular meeting place.  He has been president of both the Worcestershire and the West Midlands Law Societies and has been a long-standing member of the Birmingham Law Society Council.
  • When David Morgan, a well-known District Councillor, summoned Matthew to his deathbed in 2001, he requested that all his money should be put in trust for the “education of the youth of Bromsgrove in music”.
  • In due course Matthew invited a number of suitable people to be become trustees of what was to be called the David Morgan Music Trust and in 2005 the first grants were awarded.  Matthew has always been at the heart of the Trust and his friendship and professional experience has been greatly appreciated by the other Trustees. His input to the Charity committee meetings will be much missed.
